Ed Fraser: Erste Single + Video „Swallow“ aus Debüt EP „Ghost Gum“

Ed Fraser, der vielen von Euch auch als Kopf und Gründer der Berliner Sludge-Rocker Heads. bekannt sein dürfte, steht in den Startlöchern zur Veröffentlichung seiner Debüt-EP Ghost Gum, welche am 13. September 2019 über This Charming Man Records erhältlich sein wird.

Der in Australien geborene und seit 2013 in Berlin lebende Musiker und Videofilmer schlägt mit seiner ersten Solo-Arbeit dunklere, beklemmendere und eindringlichere Töne an, als es mit seiner Hauptband Heads. der Fall ist.

Auf Ghost Gum besingt Fraser mit seiner tiefen Stimme Themen von Verlust und Romantik, die von experimentellerer Instrumentierung und vielschichtigen Gesangslinien untermalt werden.

Die Tracks von Ghost Gum wurden innerhalb einer Woche in Berlin unter Mithilfe von Spike Rogers am Schlagzeug und Rosa Mercedes am Bass eingespielt und aufgenommen und von niemand geringeren als Magnus Lindberg (Cult of Luna) gemischt und gemastert. Als Gastmusiker treten u.a. Paul Seidel und Peter Voigtmann von The Ocean in Erscheinung. Das Coverartwork stammt vom australischen Künstler Luke Frase (Amyl & the Sniffers, John Frusciante).

Mit Swallow bekommen wir nun einen ersten Höreindruck von dem, was Fraser auf Ghost Gum dem Hörer servieren wird.

Der Song und das dazugehörige Video beschwört eine dichte, gedankenversunkene Atmosphäre und die übereinanderliegenden, verzerrten Gitarrenlinien geben ein unruhiges Gefühl.

Für Fraser als Songwriter also ein Ausflug in neue, unbekannte Gefilde, der durch das hervorragende Video, gedreht an einem schönen Lost Place im Süden Berlins, perfekt visualiert wird.

Ed Fraser zu Swallow:
We shot the video for Swallow with filmmaker Christiania Krueger at Beelitz, which is an abandoned Soviet hospital complex about an hour South of Berlin. Beelitz has some pretty creepy stories around it, so together Rosa and I wrote one of our own to shoot out there. Our 3 stars were Victor, Magnus and Anton, all local Berlin kids. None of them have acted in anything before and they really did an incredible job. We mostly had a good time during the shoot, riding around on rental pro bmx bikes worth way too much money and playing with nerf guns.

We definitely weren’t supposed to be in these old buildings though and we were yelled at and kicked out by an angry tour operator on the afternoon of the first day of shooting. The tour operator and her camera happy tour group seemed pretty surprised by us, mostly by Anton’s full size bow and arrow, which unfortunately didn’t make it to the final cut. We ended things on a high note though, with the kids and crew destroying all challengers at laser tag. We almost felt bad for the 9 year olds we were pummelling. My call sign was Mystique.“
