exklusive Song-Premiere: Pop.1280 – Under Duress

Die New Yorker Industrial-Punk-Band Pop.1280 veröffentlicht am 06. Dezember 2019 ein neues Album über das Brüsseler Label Weyrd Son Records und präsentiert uns heute die erste Single Under Duress.

Von der nach dem bekannten Pulp-Roman Population 1280 (1280 schwarze Seelen) von Jim Thompson benannten Formation erschien bisher mit Horror (2012), Imps of Perversion (2013) und Paradise (2016) drei Alben auf dem renommierten New Yorker Indielabel Sacred Bones Records, auf denen die New Yorker Cyberpunks einen brutalen, aggressiven Sound entwickelten, der in der Tradition von Künstlern wie The Velvet Underground, Suicide, Joy Division, The Birthday Party oder auch Sonic Youth steht.

Die Entstehung des bevorstehenden, neuen Albums Way Station führte Pop.1280 zurück zu der Zeit, als sie ihre letzte LP Paradise fertig stellten und ihr langjähriger Freund und Drummer Andrew Chugg bekannt gab, die Band zu verlassen.

Die damals anstehenden US- und Europa-Touren wurden in der Folge mit Ersatzdrummern absolviert und bei der Rückkehr nach New York wurde das musikalische Konzept von Pop.1280 neu überdacht und viel mit Drum Machines und Samplern experimentiert. Als schließlich auch noch Allegra Sauvage (Synth) aus der Band ausschied, wurden die wöchentlichen Bandproben fortan zu Sampling-Sessions, um neue Klänge zu erkunden, die zur Einfachheit eines Duos passen könnten.

Mit Matthew Hord (Running, Chicago) fanden Chris Bug und Ivan Lip schließlich ein neues Mitglied, der auch noch mehr über analoge Synthesizer wusste als jeder, mit dem sie bisher in Pop.1280 zusammen gearbeitet hatten:

„He started jamming with us and our sparks of ideas became a spreading wildfire.  Hungry to record, we went into Andrew Chugg’s studio and tracked 11 songs using a myriad of synths, guitar, sampler, drum machine, acoustic 12-string guitar, piano, scrap metal, and anything else we could find around his studio.  We invited Scott Kiernan (YOU., ESP TV) to add guitar to two tracks (Hospice and Secret Rendezvous). At the end of many weekend sessions, we emerged with a strange, atmospheric record laced with electronic and industrial sounds and rhythms. Our sonic risks paid off as we let songs announce themselves to us, materializing from the fog of our experiences and thoughts, our creation capped by a mastering session with long-time collaborator, Josh Bonati.  We had written some of our strongest hooks and at the same time some of our most idiosyncratic songs.“

Auf Way Station mischen Pop.1280 also erneut verschiedenste Einflüsse aus New Wave, Punk, Noise, Industrial, Tribal und Electronics. Textlich geht es auf dem Album um die schmerzvollen und angstbesetzten Themen in den eigenen Tiefen ihres Inneren, wie z.B. Tod und Alterungsprozesse, die Vergänglichkeit des Daseins oder persönliche Verluste.

Mit Under Duress präsentieren Pop.1280 jetzt einen ersten Vorgeschmack auf die Songs des bevorstehenden Albums Way Station.

Die Band sagt zu Under Duress:
„Under Duress started out as just a drumbeat that sounded like it had a song inside of it.  We layered synthesizers and samples onto it and took it into the studio.  There was an upright piano there, and spontaneously we decided to play that on the intro and throughout the song and it affected the mood incredibly.  The swells of analog synth and samples that bounce off each other like waves after the choruses really affect us and are very satisfying to play live.

Lyrically, this song is very open to interpretation, but it’s about losing people to death, empathy for them and for the other people who were close to them.  It’s also about our inability to fully know another person’s experience and the frustration, comfort, guilt, and hopelessness that this can create. This feeling can even extend to how humans seem to look at huge issues that affect all of us. There’s hurting and empathy, but then a feeling of hopelessness and an inability to grasp the vastness of our problems.  The car crash in the song was a real event, but stands as a symbol for that moment that changes everything, and we show up on the scene later to try to figure out what happened and how to move forward.“
