Interview mit Delay Trees
Am 10. Januar erscheint „Readymade“, das neue Album der Finnen von Delay Trees. Sänger und Songwriter Rami Vierula war so freundlich, uns dazu ein paar Fragen zu beantworten.

Wir fühlen uns sehr entspannt, das Album ist ein gutes Abbild dessen, was Delay Trees momentan ausmacht. Wir freuen uns zudem sehr auf die Konzerte, neue Leute kennenzulernen und unsere Musik zu spielen. Mit unserem Vorgängeralbum „Doze“ haben wir uns deutlich introvertierter gefühlt – es ist eine willkommene Veränderungen für uns.
Die meisten unserer Ziele, wenn es um das Machen von Musik geht, sind gleich geblieben, aber natürlich haben wir uns als Künstler weiterentwickelt. Die Rollen innerhalb der Band fühlen sich selbstverständlicher an, was die Arbeit im Studio und auf Tour deutlich leichter macht. Wir haben mittlerweile auch eine kleine, aber treue Fangemeinde, es ist also nicht mehr so, dass wir die Musik nur noch für uns selbst machen. Es ist ein sehr anspornender und glücklich machender Gedanke, dass jemand unseren Songs wirklich zuhört und vielleicht sogar etwas daraus ziehen kann.
Normalerweise sind die kälteren Monate eine einträgliche Zeit für mich, da man in der Regel drinnen bleibt, sich Filme ansieht und einfach nur Musik macht. In den letzten Jahren habe ich gelernt, beim musizieren meiner Intuition zu vertrauen und spontaner zu agieren. Es ist toll, Musik aufnehmen zu können, die irgendwie immer noch nach ihrer eigenen Form sucht und nicht bis ins letzte Detail durchdacht ist. Aber so simpel, wie es klingt, das Leben und Kunst im Allgemeinen sind die Dinge, die am meisten inspirieren.
Die Leute in Deutschland sind zugänglicher als in Finnland. Es ist inspirierend, an neue Orte zu Reisen und neue Leute kennenzulernen. Überall, wo wir gespielt haben, war jeder sehr freundlich zu uns, es gibt also keine wirklich großen Unterschiede. Wir haben trotzdem sehr schöne Erinnerungen an unsere Touren in Deutschland und hoffen, bald wiederkommen zu können. Besonders die Astra Stube in Hamburg hat einen ganz besonderen Platz in unseren Herzen.
Wir haben ein normales Alltagsleben, wechselnd zwischen langweilig und wunderschön. Alle von uns haben Jobs. Ich schreibe außerdem dieses Jahr meine Masterarbeit in Aesthetics an der Helsinki Universität, wir werden sehen, wie das wird.
Brian Eno oder David Bowie. Die beiden sind unsere Band-Helden/Lieblinge. Wir hätten aber auch nichts dagegen, mit Deerhunter oder Teenage Fanclub auf Tour zu gehen.

Ich denke, wir werden uns mit dem nächsten Album Zeit lassen. Vielleicht wird es experimenteller und rhythmischer, vielleicht ein synth-basiertes Ambient-Album… Ich habe bisher nur ein paar Demos fertig, es ist also noch alles möglich. Wir konzentrieren uns momentan einfach stark auf „Readymade“, und da es auch noch nicht allzu lange her ist, dass wir „Doze“ herausgebracht haben, wird das hoffentlich auch noch eine Weile so bleiben.

PiN: I really enjoyed your new album. How do you guys feel about the release of „Readymade“?
We’re feeling really relaxed, the album is a good portrayal of what Delay
Trees is right now. We’re also really looking forward to the live shows,
meeting people and playing our music. With our previous album ‘Doze’ we
were feeling very more introverted so it’s a great change for us.

PiN: How would you describe the development of Delay Trees from the
beginnings of you as a band till today?
Most of our goals in terms of making music have stayed the same, but of
course we’ve grown as artists. The roles within the band feel more natural
which makes everything easier in the studio and on the road. Also now we
have a small but dedicated fan-base so it’s not like we’re making this
music just to ourselves anymore. It’s a very rewarding thought that
someone somewhere actually listens to your songs and maybe gets something
out of them.

PiN: What is your main approach when it comes to songwriting? Is there any
special kind of source for your inspiration?
Usually the colder months are a prolific time for me ‘cos you’re just
basically staying indoors, watching movies and just playing music. In the
past few years I’ve learned to trust my intuition and be more
immediate in making music. It’s great to be able to record music that is
still somehow searching for its own form and everything is not that
thought over or calculated yet. But as boring as it sounds, life and art
in general are the most inspiring things.

PiN: You already experienced playing in Germany. How was that, what felt
differently compared to your concerts in Finland?
The crowd is more approachable in Germany than in Finland. It’s inspiring
to see new places and meet new people. Everyone has been very friendly
towards us anywhere we’ve played, so there are no major differences
really. However we have fond memories of our tours in Germany and hope to
come back soon. Especially Astra Stube in Hamburg holds a very special
place in all of our hearts.

PiN: What do you guys do when you’re not making music?
Basic everyday living, varying between boring and beautiful. All of us
have dayjobs on the side. I’m also trying to scrape together my master’s
thesis in aesthetics at Helsinki University this year, let’s see how that
goes.

PiN: Which artists would you like to work with, if there was any chance?
Brian Eno or David Bowie. Both of them are band favourites/heros. We
wouldn’t mind touring with Deerhunter or Teenage Fanclub either.

PiN: Are there already any ideas how the next Delay Trees record will sound like?
I think we’ll take our time with the next record. Maybe it’ll be more
experimental and rhythmic, maybe a synth-based ambient album… I’ve only
written a few demos so anything can happen. We’re very much just focusing
on ‘Readymade’ now and it’s not that long ago since we released ‘Doze’
either, so hopefully this will do for a while.
